So about a month ago a reporter and a photographer from the AP came from NRS and interviewed and took pictures of me and other volunteers/staff. This is one of the outcomes: http://hosted.ap.org/specials/interactives/_national/runaway_switchboard
I'm the one narrating it and there are many, many pictures of me, some of which are very unflatering (including me going and eating brownies)....
There are also articles in papers across the country including USA Today... | | Monday, March 31st, 2008 | | 6:26 pm |
As my teacher put it, the stars have been aligned for me this past week... I got into all of the colleges I applied to (Berkeley, Pomona, Vassar, MIddlebury, Wellesley, and Duke), I'm going to the international science fair, and I got $875 in awards from science fair... Let me just say that this has been an amazing week! Now I'm going to visit Vassar, Middlebury, and Wellesley cause I really don't know where I want to go... | | Monday, March 17th, 2008 | | 8:19 pm |
Me and 3 of my friends went out prom dress shopping today... I ended up finding a dress that I never in my life thought that I would try on let alone buy... Its kinda poofy and very red... I put up pictures on facebook, but I didn't add any of my actual dress cause I wanted it to be a surprise... but I wanna know what people think... unfortunately I can't post pictures on LJ, I don't know how... but I can e-mail them to you if you want... | | Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 | | 5:33 pm |
General Update
I'm home sick so I have time to update, yay! School is school, I have 7 more days of classes until spring break. Tomorrow is my French oral (the one that counts towards my IB score) I'm talking about the relations between France and Lebanon and I still have to memorize the last bit of it... Friday my final TOK essay is due (Context and the Nature of Truth) and then the only part of TOK left is our orals... Spring break is going to be studying for mock exams, hopefully buying a prom dress, probably hanging out with friends... The week after spring break is going to be hell though... Monday and Tuesday are the start of mocks. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are science fair and, somewhere in/around there I should be hearing back from all of my colleges. Then the week after I need to make up the mock exams that I missed cause of science fair. | | Sunday, January 13th, 2008 | | 10:28 am |

So I've been having a lot of problems writing college essays. I bring them in for my teachers to look at and they say that they either don't tell the reader enough about me or that they don't stand out enough, etc... One of my teachers asked me to explain something in more detail to her and I tried but, even though I kinda knew what I wanted to say, I just couldn't explain it. I was thinking about that a lot especially since the book I'm reading for TOK is a lot about identiy and categories and the power of language, etc so I decided why not write an essay kinda revolving around all of this. So I did... I was wondering if you guys could give me some feed back on it... If its too rambling, not what they are looking for etc before I bring it in for my teachers to see cause I really don't know if it's good or not... Oh, by the way, it would fit under the Common App create your own question. - Eva | | Tuesday, October 9th, 2007 | | 4:51 pm |
life has been crazy recently what with school and college apps and everything... but, yesterday was awesome! I shadowed someone in the Marine Mammals department at the aquarium at it was amazing. We started out by sorting fish... It was kinda a mix between the seattle fish place at pikes street market and bozo buckets because we were sorting the herring out into small medium and large bins and the large bin was a good several feet away... Then we cleaned out the penguin exhibit, which sounds gross, but was actually a lot of fun because we were dodging penguins and they were yelling at us and we could really see their personalities. Plus we got to pet one... We then got to see the planning for the dolphin show and watch it from the back wall right next to the trainer and we got to go into the beluga exhibit to clean off algae. We also got to watch several other dolphin shows from different prespectives, watch mayauk get trained (and her calf was right there), help train another one of the belugas, see the sea lions get trained, and help train the otters (from the outside of the habitat though because otters can be dangerous) It was an awesome day, but a lot of work... | | Friday, September 28th, 2007 | | 10:09 pm |

I did my first Veillee last night... The theme of the day was world resources, so I did a simulation where we had each family get a combination of oranges, gas cans, scissors, paper, and cardboard car models (not everyone had all of these things). Some families started off with a lot, with others started off with a mere 5 oranges... They then had to try to trade with other countries in order to get more stuff. ie. If you ended up with 5 oranges 5 gas cans and 2 cars (which you made using the paper the cardboard model, and the scissors) you got 50 points. I was worried that it wasn't going to work because it was kinda complicated, but it did work and the debriefing was really good. Now I can be a lot more relaxed... | | Wednesday, July 18th, 2007 | | 10:10 pm |
I'm at MVO now... Today we visited Lac du Bois Bemidji and after we went bowling... We played 3 games and for the last game our lane did le bowling bizarre... I bowled while on someone's back (piggy back) and someone else bowled while doing the wheelbarrow... It was very amusing and I have pictures... | | Thursday, July 12th, 2007 | | 2:53 pm |

Eight days till I leave for Lac du Bois!!! The past couple of weeks have been crazy... Last week wendsday we got 3 and a half inches of rain in less than two hours. The storm was really pretty and cool untill I realized our basement was flooding. Not only was water coming up the drains, it was also coming in through the back door. We had about 6 inches of water throught are entire basement and we had to run around like crazy trying to save things. in the end we actually didn't lose too much, old science fair and history fair boards, art supplies, some books. The biggest thing is that we lost a lot of my dad's old books and magazines... I'm also very happy that I'm doing higher math next year because I lost my history binder... All that work... I just really hope that I didn't fail the AP Calc test, otherwise I'm going to be screwed next year... After spending all wednesday night and thursday cleaning, I had to spend all friday collecting and replacing samplers in the river for Science Fair. Then we left on Saturday for Seattle, which was fun, but a lot of work (we went on long steep hikes and long kayaks) This week I need to count the bugs that I collected last week from the river. I'm also going to be at the Shedd and NRS a lot... | | Friday, May 25th, 2007 | | 6:50 pm |
Pirates was fuckin' awesome... It was so random, yet SO good... I'm not going to say too much because I know people probably haven't seen it yet... But it was amazing... Me and my friend got out of there and were just like "Holy Shit" that movie was undescribable... Who needs drugs when you can just watch pirates... Oh, if anyone does go see the movie, make sure you stay through all of the credits because there is a bonus clip at the end... | | Thursday, May 24th, 2007 | | 8:17 pm |
I'm happy. I'm done with APs and IBs for this year. In fact, I never have to take another AP test unless I choose to do so (next year all of my classes have IB tests...) I'm starting to get really pumped for college, which is kinda sad because I know I have a whole year of high school left... But I got my ACT scores back today and I got a 35 so that is making me really pumped. That combined with the 2350 I got on the SAT and I should be set... So Molly (the volunteer coordinator at the National Runaway Switchboard)nominated me to be the next teen volunteer representative on the Board of Directors. I'm going to have to interview with a couple people and go through media training before it's offical though... I love it at NRS, the people are so awesome there... I'm also happy because Pirates is coming out tomorrow... I'm going to go to school dressed up in a pirate costume because I am just that nerdy... | | Saturday, May 12th, 2007 | | 2:38 pm |
So I got out of my IB History test last wendsday feeling really good because I wrote two good essays and a good DBQ. Both essays I wrote were on questions that we had for tests earlier this year, meaning that I had already wrote outlines for them. At first I thought it was just because IB sometimes uses similiar questions... But then I learned this... "The IB wishes to apologize for an error in the production of the May 2007 history HL/SL paper 2. The questions in this paper are those from the May 2005 session. This error arose because of wrongly identifying alternative examination papers created for the May 2005 session. A spare paper should have been forwarded for use in the May 2007 session, but in its place the actual May 2005 paper was used by mistake. This is of course highly regrettable. At the grade award meeting for history close attention will be paid to the results for all schools with the aim of identifying anomalies in the results for this assessment component. For example, comparisons will be made with candidates’ performance on other components and in comparison with the teachers’ predicted grades. Where differentials can be linked to prior experience of the paper, an adjustment to the marks awarded will be considered. Again, we apologize for this serious oversight. As in each examination session, every effort will be made to ensure that the results for history are a true reflection of each candidate’s ability." What this means... They are going to grade our tests really really hard... But they are going to compare our results on other components so I really hope I did well on Paper 1 (the DBQ) and I got a really good grade on the internal assessment, so that should help me... In other news... The AP Euro exam was a joke... I spent most of the time during the essay part staring at my paper and going "Aw fuck, I don't know the answer to any of the questions" (We haven't taken Euro history since freshie year, but our school thinks its a good idea for the juniors to take it because we study 20th century history...) | | Wednesday, May 9th, 2007 | | 6:08 pm |
hello this is eva's left hand typing. her right hand is on strike... it feels like it works too long of hours, in bad conditions, with low wages and little to no benifits. she will go back to work after she agrees on a fair contract... | | Friday, April 13th, 2007 | | 8:57 am |
So I promised that I would write about France... I left Chicago Thursday afternoon (chicago time) and got to Paris Friday Morning (paris time). The only person who really slept on the plane was Mr. Sauer and that was because he had an eye mask, ear plugs, and sleeping pills. He was so out of it that Jasmine couldn't wake him up when the dinner came... So on Friday we went straight to the school where we ate lunch in their cafeteria. The food was better than our school's food (it was at least recognizable) but it still really sucked and they didn't have too much in the way of vegetarian food... After lunch we went to the schools "science museum" Let me just preface this by saying that the school is really old, it was built in the 1500s. So the museum had all of these old science artifacts from the school. It was pretty neat, but i think we were all too tired to really appreciate it. Afterwards we watched the DVD that the Frenchies created of their trip to Chicago and then I went to Elodie's moms house. The next day I went to Elodie's English class in the morning and then moved my stuff from her mom's house to her dad's house. That afternoon I went to Montemarte with her dad because she had a lot of work to do and that night we went to her dad's friend's house for dinner. Sunday Elodie and I went to Versailles and then we came back and just relaxed at her house. Monday I was back with my school group... We went to the Louvre, the Palais Royal, and the Hotel de Ville. Afterwards we went to a concert at the school. The first part (soloists and the orchestra) was really good. The second part was Carmen and that was just a bit odd. For the first song (L'amour est un oiseau...) one of their teachers played Carmen and while singing she was pratically molesting the poor high school guys. You could see the terror on their faces... I'll update on the rest of the week later and I'll eventually get pictures up on facebook... | | Sunday, April 8th, 2007 | | 5:23 pm |
I'm back from France and don't want to be... especially since it is freezing here (literally) and i have so much homework... I'll post more about what I did later, but I LOVED my french family and it's really fun to be in France with Sauer (my history teacher)... uggh, i really don't want to do homework and my body really doesn't want to be awake... (it's past midnight in Paris right now) | | Sunday, March 25th, 2007 | | 6:44 pm |
I AM GOING TO BE COMPETING AT THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am one of four students from Chicago who are going (three out of the four are from my school)!!! I'm really really excited.... We get to go to Albaquerque (sp?) for a week!!! And it's free!! | | Wednesday, March 14th, 2007 | | 7:29 pm |
Only at Lincoln Park Middle March will you hear a trio composed of an electric guitar, a cello, and an acordian playing a mixture of Klezmer and the Beatles... |
